Biography
Bethany Cartwright, M.D., Ph.D. is a pediatrician at Children's Health℠ and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She has a specialized clinical interest in childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes. She also consults on the multidisciplinary Adolescent Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery team.
She earned her Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology and her medical degree from UT Southwestern in the Medical Scientist Training Program. Dr. Cartwright completed her general pediatrics residency and her pediatric endocrinology fellowship training at UT Southwestern as a member of the Pediatric Physician Scientist Training Program.
Dr. Cartwright performs basic and translational research in pediatric adipose development. She is the recipient of the W.W. Caruth Scholar Award and has participated in several training grants from the National Institutes of Health in the field of endocrinology and metabolism as well as cell and molecular biology. She is passionate about furthering medical education on obesity prevention and treatment for medical students, residents, and fellows.
"I am particularly interested in educating health care providers about weight stigma," Dr. Cartwright says. “As physicians, we need to make sure that all patients with larger bodies are treated with compassion, sensitivity and respect.”
In what little spare time her daughter allows, Dr. Cartwright enjoys cooking, gardening, dancing, knitting, science fiction, and playing board games with her husband.
