Biography

Gokhan Kalkan, M.D., is a Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist at Children’s Health℠ and an Associate Professor at UT Southwestern. He cares for children with serious infections that are hard to treat such as sepsis, bloodstream infections, bone and joint infections and complicated pneumonia. He has a special interest in careful diagnosis of infections that are hard to detect, as well as safe, effective use of antibiotics through antimicrobial stewardship. In addition to his training in pediatric infectious diseases, Dr. Kalkan is also fellowship-trained in pediatric critical care, allowing him to care for children with severe or rapidly changing infections.

“I am passionate about pediatric infectious diseases because it challenges me to look for the hidden details that can be missed and to make careful, accurate diagnoses,” Dr. Kalkan says. “Infections can change quickly and show up in unexpected ways, so I work to help families understand what is happening and what we can do next.”

Dr. Kalkan earned his medical degree from Marmara University Faculty of Medicine. He completed pediatric residency training at Hacettepe University in Ankara and UT Southwestern – Children’s Medical Center. He then completed fellowship training in Pediatric Critical Care at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center and in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

“I value clear communication and coordinated care,” he says. “I work closely with specialists across Children’s Health to ensure families understand each step of the evaluation and treatment plan.”

His research interests include infections in critically ill children, antimicrobial stewardship and improving diagnosis and outcomes for complex pediatric infections.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Kalkan enjoys spending time with his family and bringing his practical, problem-solving approach to DIY projects and gardening.
