Quality care

Quality care

Children’s is the only pediatric hospital in the region with the depth of experience and breadth of specialties to undertake the most complex clinical care. From simple eye exams to specialized treatments in areas such as heart disease, endocrinology and cystic fibrosis, we have the resources, technology, experience, and education to care for your child.

  • The only academic health care facility in North Texas dedicated exclusively to the comprehensive care of children from birth to age 18
  • The first pediatric hospital in Texas to be designated as a Level I Trauma Center
  • A major pediatric transplant center for kidney, liver, heart, intestine and bone marrow
  • The first pediatric hospital in the nation with seven disease-specific management program certifications by The Joint Commission: Asthma Management; Autism Evaluation/Diagnostic; Diabetes Education; Eating Disorders; Comprehensive Epilepsy Program; Fetal Heart Program and Pediatric Pain Management The largest in the country for programs such as cancer, sickle cell and cystic fibrosis
  • The only pediatric-only sleep center in Dallas accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine
  • A nationally-renowned pediatric regional transport services team with accreditation in three modes of transportation: ground ambulance, helicopter and jet

In addition, Children’s is the primary pediatric teaching facility for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. The research that the medical staff at Children’s conducts is instrumental in developing treatments, therapies and greater understanding of pediatric diseases.

Quality care in every specialty

Prestigious awards, special designations, and elite certifications demonstrate Children’s Health℠ dedication to the provision of quality care and serve as a measurement of its success.

Joint Commission recognition for disease-specific care: The rigorous use of best practices at Children’s Health is the reason that we have seven disease-specific care programs certified by The Joint Commission, the nation’s predominant standard-setting accrediting and certifying regulatory body in health care.

Highest recognition for nursing: American Nurses Credentialing Center awarded our nursing staff with the Magnet Recognition Program, the highest national recognition for superior nursing, a benchmark of quality care and adherence to best practices. The Magnet Award provides a clear indicator of quality, ranking Children’s Health among the top 5% of pediatric hospitals in the nation.

Primary care recognition: The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has designated the first six Pediatric Group locations as Level III patient-centered medical homes, demonstrating a commitment to quality and improvement.

Leaders in pediatric transplants: Experts at Children’s Health performed the state’s first combined heart-liver transplant. Experts have completed more than 200 pediatric heart transplants since performing the Center’s first in 1988.  The staff at Children’s Heath performs more than 600 operations and nearly 400 open-heart procedures annually at The Heart Center.

Highest level NICU care: The American Academy of Pediatrics recognized our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), for providing cutting edge treatments and saving the lives of critically ill newborns, by bestowing its highest designation of Level IV NICU.

Proven asthma management results: The Asthma Management Program, the first in Texas to be certified by the Joint Commission for disease specific care for asthma patients, improved outcomes for pediatric asthma patients, resulting in:

  • 71% reduction in missed school or day care days
  • 77% reduction in the number of asthma-related Emergency Department visits
  • 88% reduction in the number of asthma-related inpatient admissions
  • 74% reduction in the number of missed days for caregivers because of a child’s asthma
  • 29% increase in asthma quality-of-life scores.

Leaders in research and innovation

Children’s Medical Center is the chief teaching facility for one of the world’s premier research institutions, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where its medical staff conducts leading edge studies that enhance the understanding of pediatric illnesses and leads to the development of cutting edge therapies.

Standing among only 14 national pediatric research centers sanctioned by the National Institutes of Health, its clinical and medical staff members conduct clinical research in cancer; infectious diseases; neonatology; psychiatry; and cardiothoracic, sickle cell, and kidney diseases, among other pediatric illnesses. This partnership allows Children's Health to provide the most up-to-date care and treatment options for our patients.
