Helping kids and teens cope with fear and anxiety associated with orthopedic injuries and pain

Tools like surgery and physical therapy help your child’s body heal – but they don’t always help them overcome their fears of getting back on a bike or anxiety about getting hurt again. That’s why Children’s Health℠ Andrews Institute for Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine has a team member dedicated to helping kids and young adults work through psychological challenges that can go along with orthopedic and sports injury problems.

We offer short-term therapy (eight to 12 sessions) that help children and young adults navigate everything from anxiety before surgery, to managing chronic pain, to staying motivated through a long recovery. We can also connect patients with longer-term care, if needed. We’re one of only a handful of programs that offer mental health support as part of orthopedic and sports injury care.

Therapists dedicated to helping kids overcome sports injuries

The Andrews Institute is home to a dedicated Behavioral Health Care Manager (BHCM), who supports patients with orthopedic sports injury issues. We work with everyone from young kids to professional athletes. Our BHCM has spent years helping patients overcome injury-related pain and anxiety – and she has deep sports experience of her own. This expertise helps us give every patient expert care, tailored to their unique needs.

Team of experts, working together

Our surgeons, orthopedic doctors, physical therapists and BHCM collaborate to care for every aspect of your child’s health. They work together to create a custom care plan and offer comprehensive support to help kids and young adults overcome pain and live healthy, active lives.

Skills for life

We teach strategies for stress management, self-care and better sleep, and for identifying and understanding difficult feelings. These skills help kids with the pain they’re facing today and can serve them for years to come.
