Resident conferences

We believe that flexibility and interactive learning are keys to cultivating sophisticated problem solving and critical thinking skills among our pediatric residents. We have a myriad of times and environments for high quality learning throughout residency. The following is a sample of resident conferences

Afternoon Case Conference: Informal and open “chalk talk” of an interesting case from the wards, focusing on pathophysiologic mechanisms of disease presentation and diagnostic workup. Regularly attended by our Program Director and Chair of Pediatrics.

Academic Half Day: Dedicated half day for wholistic education every 2 weeks during outpatient and elective blocks which include: journal clubs, morning reports, group discussions surrounding the social determinants of medicine, and pediatric board prep. 

Simulation: Simulation half days alternate with Academic half days throughout the year. Simulation involves rotating through hands-on cases using state-of-the-art manikins and faculty-directed skills sessions. Residents also have the opportunity for simulation experience during their PICU, NICU, and ED rotations.

Resident Midday Report: A formal senior resident case presentation and discussion involving multidisciplinary faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students. 

Noon Conference: Daily educational series for all pediatric residents. Covers the range of American Board of Pediatrics content specifications with a variety of delivery formats. Speakers are invited from all hospital departments and the greater Dallas area. 

Multidisciplinary Conference: Hospital-wide conference hosted by faculty that discuss interesting clinical cases that required a multi-disciplinary approach to care. These presentations also highlight relevant translational research performed by our colleagues at UT Southwestern, one of the leading research institutions in the country. 

Grand Rounds: Hospital-wide presentation and discussion with current faculty or visiting guests.
