Facilities

UT Southwestern: A residency program’s strength is dependent on the intellectual rigor, creativity and compassion of its faculty. UT Southwestern is our residency program’s ACGME sponsoring institution, and it attracts and cultivates some of the best medical faculty, anywhere, including many of our most innovative graduates.

We believe that at a major academic training center like ours, residents should be working with faculty who question fundamental assumptions, and work to advance the current limits of medicine.  UT Southwestern faculty – and our residents – function at the frontiers of modern medicine, helping to discover and apply new ways we can help children and society.

Our trainees not only benefit from UT Southwestern faculty members’ innovations as part of the medical care we offer our patients; this also creates valuable education and research opportunities. Such opportunities contribute to our residents’ career development and success, which is one of our overarching goals.  Most fundamentally, this level of innovation helps us advance the state of medicine.

Children’s Medical Center Dallas: In the spirit of medical residency’s time-honored “house officer” roles, the primary hospital “house” for our residents’ practice is within Children’s Medical Center. It is our residency program’s ACGME major participating site. Children's is one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country and one of the largest pediatric health care providers in the nation. It is the only academic health care facility in North Texas dedicated exclusively to the comprehensive care of children. Our 487 bed hospital houses one of the busiest pediatric Emergency Departments in the nation, the first Level 1 pediatric trauma center in North Texas, representation by all pediatric subspecialties, the premier referral NICU in North Texas (Level IV), and a level 1 PICU and CVICU.

Visitors to our campus consistently comment on our beautiful hospital facilities, many of which have been recently built or redesigned. The design principles for the hospital help us advance our educational mission.  Our educational facilities are excellent, with dedicated educational office and conference suites and resident libraries for front line use. Our clinical facilities are built such that we able to take care of almost any disease or condition afflicting children, with the most advanced resources.

Furthermore, the opportunities we have for residents’ engagement at Children’s makes our residents impactful leaders in our hospital setting.  Vibrant efforts like our Resident Safety Council, the use of the Pediatric Early Warning System (PEWS), helpful innovations in patient discharge directions, and improvements in hospital patient tracking and patient panel sign-over tools have all been highly collaborative projects involving our residents in leadership roles.

Finally, our rich array of talented Children’s staff, including nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, dietitians, and many others are profoundly dedicated to resident education. They provide invaluable hands-on, front-line teaching as our residents grow into experienced and skilled clinicians.

Parkland Hospital: Recently constructed with state-of-the-art facilities, Parkland is the public hospital for Dallas County and the center of the public health system locally. Parkland has been renowned as one of the nation’s leading providers of maternity care for more than half a century and averages more than 10,000 deliveries per year. Residents gain valuable experience participating in neonatal resuscitation at deliveries, overseeing well babies in the Newborn Nursery, and caring for premature and medically complex neonates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Pediatrics in our community: We feel strongly that our residents' service footprints extend beyond our hospital-based settings. Accordingly, we also have longitudinal engagements with children throughout our DFW metroplex. We seek out, and learn from, experts in a wide variety of different clinics and social service sites.
