PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency
Program purpose
The PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to contribute to the development of knowledgeable, skillful and capable clinical pharmacists in the specialty of pediatrics. The experience of a PGY2 pediatric residency provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge into the provision of pediatric patient care. Residents who successfully complete a PGY2 pediatric pharmacy residency program are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, academia and board certification in pediatrics. .
Educational outcomes
- Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills in the pediatric patient care setting
- Optimize the care of inpatient and outpatient pediatric patients by providing evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team
- Serve as an authoritative resource on the optimal use of medications used to treat pediatric patients
- Evaluate, manage, and improve the medication-use process in pediatric patient care areas
- Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training or educational activities for pediatric health care professionals, health care professionals in training, and the public
- Conduct pediatric pharmacy research
Program structure
PGY2 residents will gain experience and independent practice with a variety of disease states and conditions and a diverse range of patients' medication treatments and health-related needs. Residents are required to spend two-thirds or more of the program in patient care activities. The required learning experiences ensure the opportunity to provide direct patient care to patients with the required disease states and conditions defined in the PGY2 Pediatric Appendix.
The residency program director and program coordinator will develop an experiential plan at the beginning of the program for each resident. The experiential component shall consist of the following core or elective learning experiences (see image below). The needs and interests of the resident and the attributes of the residency program will be utilized in the development of the plan. Additional elective rotations may be available based on the resident’s interest and skill set.

Staffing component
The PGY2 resident will be required to complete a minimum of 240 hours of staffing. Staffing may consist of any practice area within the department but is typically focused on clinical activities for acute care services.

Education/research opportunities
A voluntary teaching certificate program is offered in conjunction with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Pharmacy. Residents will also have the opportunity to precept pharmacy students, lead pharmacy student/intern topic discussions, mentor pharmacy interns and deliver a continuing education presentation.
The Pharmacy Scholarly Oversight Committee provides support and mentorship to residents for longitudinal research projects with oversight from the RPD. This committee assists the resident in creating and maintaining realistic deadlines and goals to complete a successful project and develop a manuscript for publication submission.
PGY2 residents will have the opportunity to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and present their research at the Pediatric Pharmacy Association (PPA) Annual Meeting.

Program requirements/application process
Applicants must be:
- Graduates of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited degree program (or one in the process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).
- Participating in or have completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program or one in the ASHP accreditation process.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the state of Texas.
Residents must obtain licensure in the state of Texas either prior to or within 90 days after the start date of the residency.
The Children’s Health Pediatric Pharmacy Residency Program (PGY2) uses the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) for all required materials. Candidate selection is based on evaluation of documents submitted in PhORCAS and virtual/on-site interview(s).
A pre-employment screening process will follow the receipt of your application and may include a criminal background check, verification of prior employment, drug screen, physical, and evidence of authorization to work in the United States.

- Three (3) letters of recommendation
