PGY1/PGY2 pharmacy administration and leadership residency
Program purpose:
The Combined PGY1/PGY2/MS Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) residency program at Children’s Health provides training and competency for aspiring pharmacy leaders in delivering patient-centered care. This program will prepare residents to assume high-level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities.
Areas of competence emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication use, quality improvement and assurance, management of human resources and financial resources, and use of technology. The residency lays the foundation for continued growth in leadership and management.
Program description
PGY1 HSPAL program
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency creates an environment to promote refined problem-solving strategies, strong professional values, and growth through supervised practice under the guidance of model practitioners. Residents will be responsible for acquiring outcome-based competencies for managing and optimizing the medication-use process and providing evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams.
In addition, the first year of residency adds introductory experience in managing clinical, operational, and outpatient pharmacy operations, emphasizing medication safety and efficacy throughout the medication-use process.
PGY2 HSPAL program
The PGY2 Pharmacy Residency builds upon skills developed during the PGY1 experience, focusing on pharmacy administration and leadership in various areas of the health system. The resident will be familiarized with five distinct areas of practice: Senior Leadership, Inpatient Clinical Pharmacy Practice, Inpatient Operations, Ambulatory Operations, and Medication-Use Safety. The two longitudinal structures of choice will develop competence in high-level managerial and leadership responsibilities.
Program structure
The program director will create a development plan for each resident at the beginning of the program. The experiential component shall consist of the following core or elective learning experiences. The resident's needs and interests and the residency program's attributes will be utilized in developing the plan. Additional elective rotations may be available based on the resident’s interest and skill set.
Staffing component
The resident will be required to complete a minimum of 240 hours of staffing for the PGY1 year and 200 hours for the PGY2 year. Staffing may consist of any practice area within the department but is typically focused on clinical activities for the PGY1 year and operational and leadership for the PGY2 year.
Education opportunities
A teaching certificate is offered by the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Pharmacy. Residents can also lead pharmacy student topic discussions, mentor pharmacy interns, participate in the weekly pharmacy lunch-and-learn educational series, complete a medication use evaluation (MUE), and deliver a continuing education presentation.
The resident is assigned to a Pharmacy Scholarly Oversight Committee to provide support and mentorship for the longitudinal research project. This committee will allow the resident to create and maintain realistic deadlines and goals to complete a successful project and develop a manuscript for publication submission.
Children’s Health offers the MODEL Leadership Academy to any aspiring leaders in the organization. MLA is an accelerated development program for leaders who want to strengthen their MODEL leadership competencies.
In addition, residents supplement their clinical and administrative learning with didactic training in the 24-month Master of Science in Pharmacy Leadership program offered through the University of Cincinnati Winkle College of Pharmacy Program.
Benefits
The PGY1 annual salary is $52,000, increasing to $56,000 for the PGY2 year. Travel support is provided for the ASHP Leadership Conference, Midyear Clinical Meeting, and the PPA Annual Meeting. A dedicated workspace with a phone and laptop with a docking station is also provided.
The Children’s Health benefits program includes medical, dental, vision, prescription, fertility, disability, and life insurance plans. Employee retirement savings plans, paid time off, and dependent care savings plans are also available.
