Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency

We recognize that it takes devoted and motivated nurses like you to continue to allow us to provide the superior care that has captured the attention of U.S. News & World Report. Children’s Health has been named one of the best pediatric hospitals in the nation and is ranked in nine specialties — a distinction enjoyed by no other pediatric hospital in the region. The mission of the Nurse Residency Program is to make life better for children by facilitating new graduate nurse transition to practice and supporting a culture of safety and excellence.

The employee-based nurse residency program at Children’s Health is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. This means the Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program meets best practice recommendations for entry-to-practice programs shown to support the most successful transition to professional practice.

Children’s Medical Center Dallas and Children’s Medical Center Plano has been designated as a Magnet® organization, an elite award given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program®.  Magnet Designation recognizes superior nursing care— a benchmark of quality and adherence to best practices that places Children’s Health among the top 8 percent of pediatric hospitals in the country.

If you’re considering a career specializing in the care of children, Children’s Health offers the year-long Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program to transition new graduate nurses to professional practice. The program is designed for new graduate nurses from BSN programs who want to specialize in pediatric nursing. Residency opportunities are available in Critical Care Services, Acute Care Services, Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, Emergency Department and Perioperative Services. The curricular framework provided by the Residency Program is designed to support the transition from advanced beginner to competent professional.

  • Eligibility Requirements/Application Process

    Application open: April 21, 2025 at 8 am

    Application close: April 30, 2025 at 5 pm

    Eligibility

    • Graduate of an accredited baccalaureate nursing program (BSN)
    • Must pass the NCLEX prior to the start of the nurse residency program ( a Texas or compact RN license is required)
    • Must be a new BSN graduate and have less than 1 year experience
    • Current American Heart Association CPR/BLS –Healthcare Provider card

    Application Process

    • Complete the application for the Nurse Residency Program
    • Submit an electronic resume following this resume template (including only outlined items)
    • Reference letters are not required as part of the initial application

    If a position is offered

    • Submit an official transcript from the university or college attended
    • HR will request an electronic submission of references through Skill Survey
  • Selection Process

    • A recruiter will review all applications received prior to the deadline
    • Applications will be screened to ensure candidates meet the residency qualifications
    • A recruiter will pre-screen candidates and managers select candidates for interviews
    • If you are selected for an interview, you will be sent a link to self-schedule via Signup Genius

    The Nurse Residency Program (NRP)

    The Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program is a yearlong residency built upon evidenced-based curriculum. During the program, nurse residents  will participate in a series of learning and work experiences that are geared toward transition to a competent professional. At the end of the program, nurse residents will have improved confidence, competence, prioritization, communication skills, and decreased stress levels.

    Program Objectives

    Upon completion of the NRP, the nurse resident will:

    • Make the transition from advanced beginner nurse to competent professional nurse in the clinical environment
    • Develop effective decision-making skills related to clinical judgment and performance
    • Provide clinical nursing leadership at the point of care
    • Strengthen his or her commitment to nursing as a professional career choice
    • Formulate an individual development plan for his or her new clinical role
    • Incorporate research-based evidence linked to practice outcomes into the care he or she provides

    Nurse residents:

    • Are considered full-time employees
    • Will begin earning pay on their first day of employment
    • Are eligible for comprehensive benefits package
    • Will accrue Paid Time Off (PTO) when employment begins
