Stay up to date as we continue to expand our award-winning care to the growing pediatric population in our metroplex by following our Instagram account @futureofchildrenshealth.
Our community is expanding. So are we.
In the past decade, the pediatric population of Texas has exploded, increasing by more than 500,000. Right here in our metroplex, the pediatric population grew by 130,000, making Dallas and Collin counties some of the fastest growing cities in the country. It is estimated that by 2025, we will have a population of 8.6 million people, up 600,000 from 2020.
27% increase in demand for our
emergency department
500k+ more children in
Texas since 2010
158,000+ more children in
DFW by 2025
And while our pediatric population continues to grow, we have seen a heightened need for our services. In the past 10 years, there has been a 27% increase in demand for emergency services. And, throughout the next 10 years, demand for inpatient pediatric subspecialty services in our regional geography is expected to expand by 5.1%.
This means – not only will we have more kids in our area who will require health care, we will have more kids in our area who require specialty, acute care – the type of care Children’s Health and UT Southwestern can provide exceptionally. We need to prepare to take care of our communities’ children when they need us.
Children's Medical Center Plano expansion
Groundbreaking for the Children’s Medical Center Plano hospital expansion took place in October 2021, and construction is expected to be complete by late 2024. Expansion plans for Children’s Medical Center Plano include a new 395,000-square-foot tower, housing 140 new inpatient beds, additional state-of-the-art critical care beds and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The updated emergency department will near double in size with 48 exam rooms, providing increased space and state-of-the-art equipment and resources critical to the hospital’s pursuit of becoming a Level II Trauma Center to serve the growing pediatric population in this region. It will also include dedicated behavioral health treatment rooms.
Expansion plans for the Plano campus include much more than space. The new tower will house expanded specialty care programs, such as cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, orthopedics and neurology, among others, offering additional kids the care they need closer to home.

Children’s Health Specialty Center Prosper
Children’s Health Specialty Center Prosper opened for patient care in February 2023.
The new center, which sits on nearly 75 acres owned by Children’s Health, expands access to care for children and families in the rapidly expanding region north of Dallas.

The Specialty Center houses a variety of services, including the Children’s Health Andrews Institute, which provides advanced musculoskeletal, sports medicine, fracture and concussion care with a full-time sports medicine specialist and team of experts available for same-day access for all acute injuries. The center is also home to a Children’s Health PM Pediatric Urgent Care location and a large multi-specialty pediatric clinic, including urology, cardiology, pulmonology, general surgery, neurology, gastroenterology and ENT/audiology, provided by Children’s Health Medical Group and UT Southwestern Medical Center providers.
Partnership with UT Southwestern in Southern Dallas
In August 2020, we announced a joint initiative with UT Southwestern Medical Center at the Reimagine RedBird development to broaden access in southern Dallas to the region’s top pediatric care.
Children’s Health will occupy space in the 150,000-square-foot UT Southwestern Medical Center at RedBird, one of the anchors for the Reimagine RedBird development. This space is expected to open in early 2024.
