For most cases, we won’t advise dietary changes specifically to reduce the risk of bleeding from esophageal varices. In some situations, for example, immediately after band ligation, we may recommend that your child avoid eating hard or sharp foods such as chips.

Esophageal varices almost always occur in the setting of chronic liver disease. It’s important to follow the doctor’s advice on how to treat your child’s liver disease to reduce the risk of developing esophageal varices.
